witness. they chose georgetown law student sandra fluk. darrell issa rejected her as not qualified to speak on the matter. fluk eventually gave her testimony in front of a congressional panel and became a target in the biggest voice of the republican party, rush limbaugh. but before limbaugh could launch his smear campaign against a private citizen, sandra fluk gave her first national interview here on the "ed show." great to have you with us tonight, sandra. now i understand that you had already planned your testimony. you were going to cite some examples of people who could have benefitted from president obama's mandate for birth control coverage. share with us what you would have told that committee today. >> that is what i was there to speak to the committee about. and that's why i was so stunned when chairman issa made the decision to not allow me to speak on behalf of those women, and to say that i was not an appropriate witness, that those women's stories were not appropriate for this committee. i cannot think of who would be more appropriate for the committee to hear from t

in early january. it has passed 219 bills that have actually been signed into law by president obama, according to the "huffington post". 219 bills. many of them insignificant measures like naming post offices. speaker john boehner's congress is about to take the prize for inaction. this is not a bipartisan problem. as stated by both liberal and conservative analysts, "we have been studying washington politics and congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional in our past writings. we have criticized both parties when we believed it was warranted. today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with the republican party." let's not forget that this was also the year that senator mitch mcconnell filibustered his own bill, an act that drew the utter consternation of senator dick durbin. >> so this may be a moment in senate history, when a senator made a proposal, and when given an opportunity for a vote on that proposal, filibustered his own proposal. i think we've now reached a new spot in the history of the senat

and responsible gun laws. you see it happening again after sandy hook. after the two firefighters who were assassinated just the other day and two police officers who were killed on christmas eve. the fact of the matter is these people buy these guns because they can, because it's so easy to buy assault weapons in the united states of america. and we've got to do something about that. yes, we've got to get people to get involved in the way they did here in l.a. with a gun buyback program. very successful program. would have been even more successful if we hadn't run out of money. there were people waiting in line for hours to give up these guns including assault weapons, a grenade launcher. you saw that automatic weapon with a silencer. these are weapons that don't really have any purpose except to kill and to kill a lot of people. it's not just gun buyback programs. assault weapons ban on a federal level. we need to eliminate the t.r. amendment, which makes it very, very difficult to have background checks that work. it requires that we destroy background checks after 24 hours. >> right.
